Top 10 things to do in Manigod

Where is Manigod?

The wonderful family ski resort of Manigod is 30 kilometres from the charming town of Annecy within the Aravis massif, and is around one hour from Geneve airport.

This authentic farming village also overlooks the picturesque valley of Thônes. There’s a wealth of Manigod activities for all to enjoy in every season including:

1. Skiing and snowboarding in Manigod

There’s something for everyone in the family-friendly ski area of Manigod with its stunning scenery and links to La Clusaz. It also boasts one of the biggest night skiing spaces in the whole of France! 

Enclosed areas for children encourage safe learning and the blue runs across Merdassier and La Croix Fry provide an excellent starting point. 

A wide variety of red runs and off-piste slopes are also available for more experienced skiers. Cross country skiers will enjoy routes at the Plateau de Beauregard, with its amazing views of Mont Blanc. Peruse the piste map to plan your ideal route!

There are also several ski schools to be found offering lessons for all abilities. The Manigod and La Cluzaz ski pass provides access to 130km of runs. Alternatively, the Aravis pass opens up the full 220km, across La Cluzaz and nearby Le Grand Bornand.

2. Paret sledging

If you’re looking for unique Manigod activities, you have to try paret sledging. This area is the proud home of this wooden sled that was once used by children to get to school! 

Try your hand at the well-loved sport by loaning a one runner sledge from the tourist office. There’s even a regular paret championship involving a timed parallel slalom to get involved in if you’re game!

3. Cycling

Road bikers will love following the footsteps of Tour de France contestants on the breathtaking slopes of the Col de la Croix Fry.

There’s plenty of routes for mountain bikes too, or try electric mountain biking for an extra boost of power! There are several reputable bike rental options in the area for you to choose from.

4. Hiking and walking

For the keen walker, there are numerous hiking trails to explore with unbeatable mountain and lake views. Discovering Manigod by foot allows you to take in its beautiful natural surroundings and native wildlife at your own pace. 

You’ll find plenty of picturesque picnic spots overlooking the pine forests and Lac du Charvinpine. Set off alone, with friends and family, or book onto a guided tour. Remember to pick up a Tournette Bornes Aravis trail map from the tourist office containing everything you need to know. 

5. Explore the Chapel Road 

Punctuating the scenic valley of Manigod are six individual chapels: Montpellaz, Joux, Tournance, Villard Dessous, Plan des Berthats and the Charmette. From a starting point located within the village, you can pick up a free informational brochure and discover the history hidden within each of them.

6. Swimming at the Col de Merdassier

The wonderful heated outdoor swimming pool in the heart of the resort centre at the Col de Merdassier is accessible to all. It’s open daily in summer from 11:30 to 12:30 and 13:30 to 19:00, except on Saturday mornings.

They also offer swimming lessons and aqua aerobics classes outside of general pool opening times.

7. Rock climbing

Rock climbing in the Aravis is an ever-popular endeavour and a wonderful way to take in the environment from new heights.

8. Visit the local market

In the sunny summer months, head out on a visit to the market in the centre of the village. Soak up the local culture and grab supplies of some of the delectable food and drink on offer, including cheeses, rich wines, chocolate, fresh bread, and colourful fruits and vegetables.

9. Visit the farm

One of the most popular Manigod activities is taking a trip to a traditional farm. Sample and purchase some of the renowned cheeses produced in the region such as Reblochon, Mont Charvin and Tomme. 

Book a tour in advance and learn all about the fascinating history of the farms and how the produce is made.

10. Head to Lo Garajo café

This New York-inspired café is a must-try, perfectly positioned in the heart of the Manigod valley. Especially popular amongst walkers and cyclists, the Garajo offers a serene and unique environment with far-reaching views across steep mountain ranges. 

Not only is the coffee second to none and the menu a delight, but you can also pick up a range of beautiful products including homewares, pottery and clothing. They also host regular events including yoga sessions and ceramics workshops.
