Mazot: the perfect small chalet for glamping in the mountains

Destinations / Travel Tips
March 13, 2025

Are you dreaming of a holiday surrounded by nature and mountain activities, but the size of your group doesnโ€™t justify booking a chalet? Introducing the Savoyard โ€œmazotโ€, an ideal solution for a small group holiday in the Alps, at any time of year.

In this article, we tell you all about these small chalets and explain how they differ from the usual accommodation and glamping offers.

What is a Savoyard mazot?

The origin and history of mazots

Savoyard โ€œmazotsโ€, which first appeared in the Middle Ages, were small granaries raised on stone stilts. Their purpose was to protect the foodstuffs that were essential to life in the mountains (cereals, dried meats, cheeses and so on) from rodents and damp.

They were also sometimes used as temporary shelters for peasants working in the fields far from the villages. Owning a well-built and elaborately-crafted mazot was a symbol of prosperity, and they were passed down from generation to generation.

From the 19th century onwards, the development of modern infrastructure and new storage techniques led to the decline of mazots, and unfortunately, some were destroyed.

A small traditional chalet transformed into charming accommodation

The old-fashioned charm of Savoyard mazots is much sought-after today. Their typical architecture with gabled roofs, timber frames and carved finishes, makes them iconic features of the Alpine landscape.

Many of them have been restored and converted into second homes or small guest rooms, perfect for families or small groups of friends. Often in remote locations, they are perfect for a revitalising stay close to the wildlife of the mountains.

Why should you choose a mazot for your mountain holiday?

Immerse yourself in Alpine tradition

These small, historic buildings are typical of the Alps and often carefully restored to combine rustic charm with modern comfort, while preserving their traditional architecture. In fact, a good restoration ensures that elements of the original building are preserved, as shown at Grand Mazot La Chandelle (below).

Choosing a Savoyard mazot for your mountain break will give you the opportunity to soak up the history and soul of Alpine heritage.

A cosy, homely little chalet

With its traditional wooden architecture, cosy interior and relaxed atmosphere, the Savoyard mazot offers a comfortable retreat after an active day  in the Alps.

Whatโ€™s more, as the holiday rental market is dominated by large chalets (often accommodating 10 or more guests), they offer a wonderful alternative for small groups or couples.

The glamping experience: countryside and comfort combined

The mazots were often built in the heart of the mountain pastures, away from the villages. Nowadays, they are the perfect way to enjoy the peace and quiet of the mountains on a holiday in the Alps.

OVO Network offers you authentic mazots that have been lovingly restored. The result is a mountain holiday that combines the charm of tradition with the serenity of the mountains and the comfort of top-of-the-range facilities.

Mazots: a cost-effective alternative for small groups

How do mazots compare to traditional chalets?

Like all seasonal accommodation, chalets have a fixed price depending on their maximum capacity. This means you will always pay the same total price, whatever the size of your group.

This can make it very expensive for each person if you are a small group staying in a large chalet. Thatโ€™s why we advise smaller groups to choose a mazot, or other smaller accommodation.

How do mazots compare to classic glamping accommodation?

Glamping options are a more affordable alternative to large chalets. The regionโ€™s campsites often offer spacious tents, caravans, or sometimes lodges or bungalows, so you can experience camping without having to compromise on comfort.

These are certainly less expensive than renovated mazots or other small chalets. But they donโ€™t offer the same sense of well-being or serenity.

Compared with these glamping offers, paying a slightly higher price means you can enjoy top-of-the-range facilities such as a private sauna and a secluded location in the heart of nature.

Activities and experiences when you stay in a mazot

Staying in the heart of nature: the ideal setting for a rejuvenating break

The beauty of the Alpine scenery is more accessible from an isolated mountain hut in the Alps, far from any built-up areas or light pollution.

In winter, snowshoeing and ski touring allow you to explore snow-covered landscapes from your doorstep. In fine weather, you can take to the trails close to your mazot, swim in high-altitude lakes, and observe mountain animals. Some might even come and play right outside your window!

Authentic alpine villages where you can stay in a mazot

Some villages in the Alps have managed to retain their authentic character and are more suited than others to the experience of a stay in a mazot.

Saint-Gervais-les-Bains

Saint-Gervais-les-Bains had its heyday in the 19th century, with the boom in spa tourism. This small town in the Mont-Blanc region holds the โ€œFamille Plusโ€ label and offers access to 450km of ski slopes, as well as hiking and mountain biking trails.

Today, the thermal baths still exist on the banks of the river, offering moments of relaxation and well-being. Surrounded by the calm of the countryside, a mazot is the ideal place to disconnect and take care of yourself.

La Giettaz

Ice skating, snowmobiling or summer sledging โ€“ thereโ€™s always something to do in this small village which welcomes tourists while retaining its old-fashioned character. You will be able to visit cheese farms, or even experience the adrenalin of a paragliding flight.

Still pretty much undiscovered by mass tourism, this Aravis resort is imbued with an authentic and reassuring charm. Its proximity to large resorts such as Megรจve makes La Giettaz an excellent option for year-round holidays.

La Clusaz

The typical Savoyard atmosphere of La Clusaz is attracting more and more families looking for Alpine charm away from the hustle and bustle. In fact, the resort is very much child-friendly, with ski schools dedicated to the very young.

La Clusaz has a fantastic ski area and excellent snow conditions in winter. It is also the home of authentic โ€œAOCโ€ Reblochon and Chevrotin cheeses. So why not treat yourself to some of these delicious delicacies and take some home for your friends!
