What is there to do in Morzine in winter?

When you book a chalet in Morzine for your mountain holiday, you'll have access to the whole of the Portes du Soleil, one of the best ski areas in the Alps. Spanning 12 resorts in France and Switzerland, it boasts 650km of pistes, including 95km of cross-country trails.

As you'd expect from such a popular location, it has a modern infrastructure, a well-developed network of ski lifts and all the services guests are likely to need during their stay, including a huge choice of equipment hire shops.

However, although skiing and snowboarding are the most popular ways to spend time in Morzine in the winter, there are plenty of other activities for non-skiers and those who just want a break from the white stuff. Here are a few of our favourite ideas:

  • Helicopter tours - Fly over the Portes du Soleil's snow-capped peaks on a unique discovery flight, lasting an average of 30 minutes, for breathtaking views of the most impressive summits. There are several service providers in the Morzine area.
  • Dog-sleigh ride - Experience the mountains in a different way, with a dog-sleigh ride. You can get to the meeting point, just beyond the Avoriaz heliport, by car or on skis. To get the most from this experience, book a 3-hour trip with an instructor.
  • Ice skating - Not far from the centre of the village, the Pingouins ice rink welcomes guests all year round, with music and lights, for a fun glide around the ice with family and friends.
  • Watch the ice hockey - Whether you’re already a fan of this fast-paced thrilling game, or you’ve never been to a game before, it would be a shame to miss the local ice hockey team, the Morzine Avoriaz Penguins, in action. Games take place at the Palais des Sports every Saturday night throughout the winter season.
  • Snowshoe walks - Swap your skis for snowshoes and explore the breathtaking scenery of Haute Savoie on foot. This activity promises a stress-free experience in the snow.

Skiing for all abilities

If you’re planning a ski trip to Morzine with a group of friends or family with mixed abilities, you can rest assured that they will all find an area to suit them.

Experienced skiers will find a wide variety of challenging runs, such as Les Creux and the Mur Suisse, which, due to its 331m drop over 1km, has its own classification as an orange run. Powder fans will find plenty of challenge on the north-facing slopes of Nyon. This area and Chammosière offer some of the best off-piste terrain.

Intermediate skiers will enjoy the pistes at Le Pleney, close to the forest. With both blue and red runs from each chairlift, this is also a great area for a mixed ability group. There are fewer crowds in Mont Chery, where the slopes are a little steeper - ideal for those who want to push themselves. There’s also easy access to the resorts of Les Arcs, Avoriaz and even parts of Switzerland.

As you’d expect from a family-friendly ski resort, there are plenty of areas where beginners can practise. There are several nursery ski areas, snowparks, several green pistes and, once you’ve learned the basics, you can gain confidence on the 29 blue pistes. There’s also an educational ski run, where children can learn about the local wildlife.

Morzine has a good choice of ski schools catering for all abilities, from first-time skiers to practised skiers looking to hone their skills in specific disciplines. Private and group lessons can be arranged with English-speaking instructors.

The resort has been awarded the Famille Plus label, so you can be sure to find quality child care as well as ski pass discounts for families with youngsters.

The resort of Morzine is made up of two parts, the first of which is linked to Les Gets and the second to Super-Morzine and Avoriaz, which offers breathtaking views and an average altitude of 2,466m. When you choose the Portes du Soleil ski pass there's even more choice, including night skiing options.

To help you prepare for your stay in central Morzine or the surrounding area, take a look at the piste map, the resort's webcams and the weather forecast.

What is there to do in Morzine in summer?

In summer, Morzine and the surrounding villages are transformed into an incredible playground, with plenty of activities for families and friends to enjoy, including swimming, canoeing, kayaking and hiking.

The resort has been awarded the ‘Famille Plus’ label so you can be sure to find a wide range of activities for children. Swimming pools, tennis courts, ice rinks, children's clubs, tree climbing... there's plenty to keep your little ones entertained while you soak up the sun on the terrace at your chalet!

In summer, you can take advantage of the Portes du Soleil Multi Pass, which offers unlimited access to a wide range of activities, as well as a bus service to the village centre and neighbouring resorts. Most of the ski lifts remain open throughout the summer, giving you easy access to higher altitudes. Many OVO Network partner properties offer travellers the Multi Pass at a preferential price.

Here are some of our favourite ways to spend a day in Morzine in summer:

  • A day out at Lac de Montriond - As well as a refreshing swim, Lac de Montriond offers paddleboarding and kayaking. You can also play mini-golf and enjoy lunch at a restaurant with a terrace and garden.
  • Horse-drawn carriage ride - Sit back and relax while a team of horses take you on a peaceful and picturesque tour of Morzine. There's a choice of routes around the resort, all starting from the tourist office in the village centre.
  • Summer sledging - Sledging doesn't stop when the snow melts! The rail toboggan just a short walk from the Pleney slopes offers year-round excitement with jumps, chicanes and bends.
  • Canyoning - Leap into mountain streams, slide down rocks and abseil down waterfalls as you make your way along rivers and rapids, supervised by a professional guide. It’s a great way to cool off on a hot day!
  • Paragliding - Get a bird’s eye view of the stunning Portes du Soleil summits as you paraglide through the peaks on this unforgettable experience. If you’re a novice, you can take a tandem flight with an instructor.

And if you choose a rental chalet with outside space such as a terrace or garden, you’ll be able to relax and enjoy the warm summer nights after an exhilarating day in the Alps.

When you book your chalet with OVO Network, you’ll have plenty of choice when it comes to the type of accommodation that suits your group. Take your pick from an authentic self-catered chalet in Les Gets, rural accommodation near the lake in Montriond, or perhaps a central chalet rental in the heart of Morzine.
