Nothing quite says “summer holidays in the French Alps” like cycling in the Annecy region. With world class routes and spectacular views of the lake, Annecy, known as the Venice of the Alps, makes the perfect holiday destination to make the most of all the Alps has to offer for road cyclists and mountain bikers.
Annecy is the perfect central location to access a wealth of road cycling routes for all levels.
The 42km cycle path around Lake Annecy itself makes for a wonderful day out with the whole family. As it takes roughly two hours and there are only a couple of short climbs, it is perfect for less experienced cyclists. Much of the path is set separate from the road making it safe for children too, however some sections are on the main road so please be aware of traffic. Why not take a picnic and stop at one of the many Annecy beaches at the side of the lake which make a perfect stop to cool off in the clear waters of Lake Annecy.
The cycle path is open all year round and a winter loop around Lake Annecy is simply stunning. Beautiful snow-capped mountains and considerably quieter roads make cycling in Annecy in winter pretty magical! Visit the lakeside village of Talloires, or Saint Jorioz, but make sure to wrap up warm as temperatures can drop below zero.
More serious road cyclists are also well catered for in the region, with many famous climbs such as the Col de La Forclaz and the Col de la Croix Fry nearby. Annecy is a regular feature of the Tour de France so you can follow in the pedal strokes of the greats on a number of routes.
A challenging but rewarding route is the 85km loop from Doussard at the south of Lake Annecy over the Col de la Croix Fry and the Col des Aravis.
Starting from Doussard head south to Saint Ferréol and then on up to the Col de Marais. Follow the road down a fast descent to the start of the sometimes steep but very beautiful climb to the Col de la Croix Fry. Descend towards La Clusaz and then turn right up to the Col des Aravis. After this relatively short climb you are rewarded with stunning views of Mont Blanc and the restaurants at the col make a good point for refreshment! All that’s left to do is to take the stunning, long and fast descent down through Flumet and the cliff-sided Gorges de l’Arly to Ugine. At Ugine, join the Albertville – Annecy bike path back to Doussard.
If you’re keen to get out on a bike ride but maybe feel that you are not quite fit enough, or that you won’t be able to keep up with the rest of your group fear not! The introduction of E-Bikes has made cycling far more accessible. With technology moving quickly these fantastic bikes are not only practical but great fun to ride too.
Standard bike and E-Bike hire is available at numerous locations in Annecy and the surrounding resorts.
Mountain biking in the area is also fantastic, with the surrounding alpine resorts of La Clusaz, Le Grand Bornand and Le Semnoz nearby. With trails for all levels, the whole family can enjoy a day on the hill.
For families we particularly love the “Family Run” which starts high up above La Clusaz and gently winds its way all the way down to the village, offering spectacular views along the way. The more adventurous riders will love rolling through the Bike Park about half way down!
For world class mountain bike trails you can visit the Portes du Soleil. The renowned biking resort of Les Gets is home to some of the best trails found in the French Alps and is a regular feature on the Crankworx World Tour. Read more about this famed biking resort on our Morzine mountain biking page.
