What's on in the Aravis

Whether you love to ski all day, every day or prefer to cosy up in your OVO Network chalet after a day spent exploring the area, the French Alps offer plenty to keep you entertained both on and off the slopes. Take a look at some of the main events taking place over the coming winter months...

Year round

Summer or winter, these events take place throughout the year.

 Annecy Old Town Market

Tuesday, Friday & Sunday 7am - 1pm

Immerse yourself in the colour, scents and sounds of a traditional French market in Annecy’s historic old town. Find everything from cheese, meat, fish, fruit and vegetables to clothing, kitchen gadgets and street food. Friday’s market also has flowers.

 

 

 

Annecy Crafts, Arts & Flea Markets

Last Saturday of each month

The various craft, art and flea markets are fabulous to explore. From hand-made jewellery, clothing and furniture, to bric-a-brac, antiques and paintings, there’s plenty to choose from to take home!

 

 

 

La Clusaz Market

Every Monday 8am - noon

La Clusaz’s weekly market is a wonderful place to explore whether you’re visiting in winter or summer. Fresh produce, local handicrafts, clothing, cheeses, jewellery and more are all available, plus a fabulous atmosphere.

 

Le Grand Bornand Market

Every Wednesday 8am - noon

Taking place throughout the year, don’t miss a visit to the market in Le Grand Bornand. With local crafts, cheeses, meats, fruit and vegetables, clothes and more on sale, it’s a great place to explore.

Night skiing and sledging

Several stations offer regular night skiing or sledging, which is a holiday highlight for many of our guests.

Manigod - Night skiing

You can ski under the stars until 9pm every Friday and Saturday night in Manigod. The restaurants on the pistes stay open too, making it a night out to remember.

 

Manigod - Paret sledging

Come along after the pistes close every day to try the wooden sledge that is unique to Manigod, under the supervision of ESF instructors.  Once used by the village children to get to school, now it’s mainly used for fun.

 

December

Until January 6, Alpine Christmas

Various locations, Annecy

Christmas starts early in Annecy, with the old town lit up from late November. There’s also an outdoor ice skating rink outside the Courier shopping centre, Nativity scenes in the churches, a Christmas market and a programme of concerts. Check with the tourist office for details as they become available, and see the LOVOVO blog post on Christmas markets.

 

December 4, St Andrew’s Fair

Annecy

This huge market takes place every year on the first Tuesday of December. More than 1,000 traders and 5km of stalls fill the streets of Annecy, with a huge variety of produce from food, wine, arts and crafts. Traditionally, this was an opportunity for local farmers to get together and trade produce, and for others to stock up with everything they needed to get them through the winter. Nowadays, it’s a great chance to pick up some unusual Christmas gifts.


December 8-9, Ski Test

Le Grand Bornand

Get ready for the new season at this manufacturers’ village on the slopes of Le Grand Bornand, bringing together some of the most prestigious ski brands. Try out the latest ski equipment, free of charge!


December 22-28, Christmas in Le Grand Bornand

Le Grand Bornand and Chinaillon

As the ski season opens, Christmas arrives in the station. It’s a week-long festival, with torchlit walks, street entertainment for all ages, and a Nativity scene. Father Christmas arrives on Christmas Eve, accompanied by ESF ski instructors, and there’s Christmas Mass in the Church Notre Dame de l'Assomption. Contact the tourist office for the full programme.

 

December 24 - January 2, Pestacles du Père Noël

Various locations, La Clusaz

This fabulous street festival has been going for over 20 years, and is one of the biggest in the Alps. The village is transformed into a festive wonderland for a celebration of Christmas with something for all ages. Expect magicians, puppet shows, story-telling and music throughout the village.

 

December 31, New Year’s Eve

Various locations, La Clusaz

Welcome in the new year and see out the old one as the ESF ski instructors treat you to a stunning display as they ski down into the village. There are fireworks at midnight, and a real party atmosphere at the bars and restaurants.

Le Grand Bornand and Chinaillon

The fun starts at 6pm with the torchlit descent by ESF ski instructors - gather in front of the tourist office in Chinaillon for a great view of the spectacle. There’s music, fluorescent face painting and fireworks in Le Grand Bornand as the village welcomes in the new year.

January 12, Le Belier Blanc Trail

Plateau du Beauregard and La Clusaz

More than 4,500 runners and walkers are expected to take part in this annual trail, which marks its 33rd year in 2019. The 8km snowshoe trek leaves Plateau du Beauregard at 5.30pm, and the 11km White trail for runners leaves the village an hour later. There’s a hot meal for all the competitors when they arrive back in the village at the end of the course. If you’re not taking part, there’s plenty of entertainment throughout the evening. January 28-31, French U16 championships

Le Grand Bornand, La Clusaz

The best young skiers in France will be in Le Grand Bornand and La Clusaz for four days of great skiing in the first stage of the French championships.

 

January 18, Full Moon party

La Clusaz

The ski slopes and lifts are open until 1am for this key date in the La Clusaz calendar - a big party on skis! A full moon pass costs €23 for adults and €13 for children, but if you already have a ski pass, prices are reduced. Check with the tourist office nearer the date for all the details.

February

February 3, Confins Trail and Ski

Les Confins, La Clusaz

This annual event organised by ESF Nordic Confins combines trail running and Nordic skiing around the scenic Lac des Confins. Take part on your own or as part of a relay team. Follow the facebook page for all the latest news and to register.


February 3, La Bornandine and Colimareille cross-country skiing race

La Grand Bornand

More than 500 people take part in this annual event at the foot of the Aravis mountains. There are prizes to be won, as well as plenty of free gifts. Prize-giving takes place in the Espace Grand-Bo at 12.30pm, and is followed by a meal for all the participants.

 

February 4-6, Digital Summits

La Clusaz

Combine skiing with this three-day digital marketing and information event, with masterclasses, workshops and conferences. And when the hard work is over, there’s plenty of entertainment laid on in the evenings. Check out the website for the programme, and the list of speakers.


February 12-18, Six Stations tournament

Various locations, including La Clusaz and Valmorel

This unique rugby tournament takes place on snowy pitches across six stations in the French Alps, with players including former French, English and International stars. There are three matches every evening and entertainment throughout the day, in a different station every day. Check the website for the full programme.

 

February 14-15, Rossignol on Tour

Le Grand Bornand Chinaillon

Your chance to test the latest ski equipment from Rossignol completely free.  There are games too, with prizes to be won. Bring ID if you want to borrow equipment to try out.


February 19, Raclette show

Le Grand Bornand Chinaillon

Come and try this Savoyard specialty, melted Raclette cheese on hot potatoes, from 3.30 to 6pm, at Les Gettiers


February 21, Festi-glisse

Le Grand Bornand Chinaillon

Celebrate all things to do with snow sports old and new in Chinaillon. Try fat bikes, ski bobs, handiski and yonner sledges - a more contemporary version of Manigod’s paret sledge with a wide ski base, made of man made materials.


February 26, Ride Events’ Night Session

Le Grand Bornand Chinaillon

Enjoy a fantastic freestyle show and ski under the stars. The fun starts at 4pm, and as well as the skiing, there’s a giant tartiflette, crepes, a bar, hot chocolate and fireworks.

March

March 5, Carnival

La Clusaz

The highlight of the winter season in La Clusaz, for guests and residents. The fun starts at about 7pm, when ski instructors and guides take part in a fancy dress parade with floats through the village. There’s plenty of music, and, of course, a firework finale.

 

March 5, Carnival

Le Grand Bornand  Chinaillon

Join the fun at the annual carnival - the fancy dress parade through Chinaillon is at 5.30pm, and if you want to take part, there are make-up sessions and costumes for sale from 2.30pm.

 

March 13, Savoyard party

La Clusaz

Party like a local at this annual event, with music and dancing from the traditional local folk band, Lou Socali. The entertainment follows a typical mountain meal - tickets are available from the tourist office for €11.

 

March 15-17, Venetian Carnival

Annecy

The canals of Annecy are the backdrop for the annual Venetian Carnival in Annecy, when hundreds of extravagantly costumed characters promenade through the medieval town. Don’t forget your camera!

 

March 16, LCZ Freestyle show

Champ Giguet, La Clusaz

Freestyle has a great history in La Clusaz, which is home to champions such as Edgar Grospiron and Candide Thovex. The LCZ Freestyle Show, from 5.30-7.30pm, is a great opportunity to see and marvel at the talents of the best freestyle skiers from the Club des Sports de La Clusaz.


March 22, Full Moon party

March 22-24, Glisse en Coeur

Le Grand Bornand Chinaillon

It’s 24-hour non-stop skiing and music at this charity event, which has been running for 12 years now, raising more than €2m for children with mental health problems. For the latest news on the events and music line-up, go to the website.

  

March 28-31, Radiomeuh Circus Festival

Parking du Salon des Dames, La Clusaz

This annual festival is organised by Radiomeuh, an online radio station based in La Clusaz with 3.3 million listeners around the world. Over the three evenings, the circus tent hosts about 10 acts, with more going on at restaurants and on the pistes. Check out the website for the line-up nearer the date.

April

April 14, The Last One

Cret du Merle, La Clusaz

As the ski season draws to a close, celebrate it with a freeride and rock party at the LCZ Park. Pro-riders and amateurs get together for this festival of music and riding, with contests and concerts. The line-up and the programme will be published on the website nearer the date.


April 14, Lake Annecy International Marathon

Lake Annecy

There could hardly be a more spectacular setting for a marathon, between the snow-topped mountains and the turquoise waters of Lake Annecy. As well as the main event, there’s a half marathon and races for children aged between seven and 15. The marathon route also takes in the villages of Sevrier, Saint-Jorioz, Duingt and Doussard. Even if you’re not taking part, it’s a great spectacle, with music and a great party atmosphere.

 

April 21, Defi Foly

Lac des Confins, La Clusaz

Every year since 1987, 150 of the area’s craziest skiers have headed for the Lac des Confins to mark the end of the ski season in La Clusaz. The idea is to ski down the hill and see how far you can get across the icy lake before you sink, and are rescued by boat. The record is 155m, set by Philippe Troubat in 2010. If you think you can beat that, register at the website below.  It’s a great day for spectators too - bring a picnic and grab a good spot on the hillside for this day-long event.
