Right on the shores of Lake Annecy - reported to be the cleanest lake in Europe - Annecy is known as the ‘Venice of the Alps’. The canals that intersect the old roads only help to add to this Venician image. It’s easy to spend your days simply strolling around the old town, with beautiful buildings everywhere you look, and wonderful restaurants and cafes to try, many with stunning lake views.
The old town of Annecy (known in French as “La Vieille Ville”) is home to the Palais de l'Isle, a picturesque medieval castle and prison found right in the heart of the city. This historic site is now home to an art and history museum which is definitely worth a visit during your stay in Annecy.
Just a few minutes' walk from the old town and you’re by the lakeside. Shady parks and beautiful beaches line the shore, spoiling you for choice on where to spend your days. The more active holiday maker can hop on a bike to whizz around the whole lake in about two hours, stopping at any of the beautiful towns and beaches along the way.
Haute Savoie might be known in winter for skiing, but the charming town of Annecy is special all year round, with markets, cobblestone streets in the old town, complete with castles and intact old town walls, pretty canals and much more to see. The mountain views from Annecy are often more spectacular in winter as the hills are white capped and sometimes are covered with snow right down to the lake.
If visiting at around the festive period the Annecy Christmas market is a must. Enjoy a glass of vin chaud, shop for handmade gifts and try a spot of ice skating. Once the sun goes down, make sure not to miss the fabulous light display projected on to the town hall.
For those wanting to make the most of the nearby ski resorts, there are a number of options.
