Haute Savoie is probably best known for cheese and skiing. Annecy is at the foot of the French Alps, so there are plenty of nearby ski resorts to choose from. Around the lake, choose from Le Semnoz or La Sambuy-Seythenex, or head to the bigger ski resorts of La Clusaz and Le Grand Bornand, just 30 minutes away by car. Morzine and the Portes du Soleil are just over an hour away, along the A410/A40 motorways, or carry on to Chamonix and Mont Blanc which are just a little further down the valley.
If snow isn't your thing, don't worry! There's plenty to do in and around Annecy from our holiday homes. Why not visit one of the beachside villages, such as Menthon St Bernard and its castle where St Bernard was born, or Veyrier du Lac for lovely views of the snowy mountains on the other side of the lake. There's also a nature reserve with a medieval castle to climb at the south end of the lake. A bike track extends most of the way around the lake, so if you're feeling like some exercise, it's a great way to see the sights of Lake Annecy.
Visitors to Annecy are sometimes confused by some similar 'old town' names. Annecy le Vieux is a town to the east of Annecy and doesn't have an old town. The historic old town of Annecy is called 'la vieille ville' and is within Annecy itself. When you're booking your holiday rentals in Annecy, make sure you know this important difference!
