Christmas — an extra special time to stay in Annecy

Christmas week in Annecy is a truly festive experience, with family entertainment, cosy restaurants, and traditional Christmas markets dotted around the pedestrianised areas of town.

Nestled at the foot of the French Alps, Annecy is probably best known for its summer attractions, such as the beautiful lake beaches, cycling and hiking. This 'Venice of the Alps' is actually a lively place all year round, and winter is no exception!

In December, Annecy turns festive, with colourful Christmas lights and decorations dotted throughout the city. The Christmas market stalls, which are individual wooden chalets, are spread over two areas of town. One has a frozen ice rink for the kids to skate on and a spirited atmosphere for eating and drinking, and the other is a short walk away, near the Hotel de Ville, where a light and sound show takes place throughout December when daylight fades.

As well as plenty of home-made goods to purchase, the market has plenty of local food to sample or buy as gifts. Sip on a vin chaud or tuck into a tartiflette while wandering around the pretty old town of Annecy! Don't forget to stop on the bridge over the canal to take the obligatory photo of the Palais de l'Isle — a palace that sits as an island in the canal which has also been used as a prison over the years.

OVO Network has villas and apartments dotted around the Lake Annecy and in the heart of the old town and in Annecy-le-Vieux. All our accommodation is self-catered and each one includes a fully-equipped kitchen and a comfortable, spacious living room and bedrooms, plus free WiFi and plenty of other lovely extras.

If you choose to stay in the old town of Annecy, you really are just a few minutes walk from everything, including the Christmas markets and shops and restaurants in the old town, as well as the pedestrianised shopping areas just beyond the old town.

For those who want to go skiing, the ski resorts of La Clusaz and Le Grand Bornand are just a half-hour drive away, while Chamonix and the famed Mont Blanc are about an hour away via a motorway. There's also Les Portes du Soleil (comprising Morzine, Avoriaz, Les Gets, Châtel and other resorts) and Le Grand Massive (Samoëns, Flaine and other skiing resorts) under an hour's drive away, along the same motorway. Annecy also has smaller, good-quality family ski resorts very close, including Le Semnoz, just ten minutes from the centre of Annecy, and La Sambuy-Seythenex just a little further south of the lake.

As well as the ski areas, there are many villages around the lake which have their own special charm at Christmas - visit Talloires, Saint Jorioz, Menthon Saint Bernard and Sevrier.

No matter where you decide to stay in Annecy, this area of Haute Savoie is a hidden gem at Christmas time. It makes an excellent base for visiting different ski resorts, but that's only if you can drag yourselves away from the charming cobbled streets of the old town. Take a look at our full range of Annecy holiday homes in the town itself and around the lake today.
