What’s on in the Aravis – Winter 2021/22

Whether you love to ski all day, every day or prefer to cosy up in your OVO Network chalet after a day spent exploring the area, the Aravis resorts offer plenty to keep you entertained both on and off the slopes. Take a look at some of the main events taking place over the coming winter months…

Throughout the Season

Local Markets in the Aravis

Enjoy shopping at one of the area’s local markets, where you can find everything from fresh produce and charcuterie to pottery and handmade gifts…

  • Les Grand-Bornand – Wednesdays, 8h to noon
  • La Clusaz – Mondays, 8h to noon
  • Thônes – Saturdays, 8h to 13h
  • Annecy – Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays, 8h to noon

Night skiing and sledging

Several stations offer regular night skiing or sledging, which is a holiday highlight for many of our guests.

Torchlit descent in Le Grand Bornand

In Chinaillon you can join a torchlit descent on one of the longest lit-up slopes in the Haute Savoie area – accompanied by the French ski school instructors! If skiing isn’t your thing, but you want to accompany your group, you will find mulled wine and hot chocolate offered at the bottom of the slopes. Takes place every Wednesday, but check the website to confirm details of dates and ski bus times. 

Night skiing in Manigod

You can ski under the stars until 21h every Friday and Saturday night in Manigod, one of the biggest night skiing areas in the Haute Savoie. During school holidays, the slopes are also open until 21h Monday to Saturday so everyone can experience skiing in the dark! The restaurants on the pistes stay open too, making it a night out to remember.

Come along after the pistes close to try the wooden sledge that is native to Manigod, under the supervision of ESF instructors.  Once used by the village children to get to school, now it’s mainly used for fun. You can also try the paret at night on a lit track!

Every Saturday, from 8 – 29 January (and with one extra session on 12 March), children over the age of six can learn how to sledge Aravis-style! The paret is like a stool on a single ski – local children used it to get to school in days gone by. Contact the tourist office for more information on this great free activity.

December…

Throughout the festive period, you’ll find all sorts of activities and entertainments taking place in our resorts – here are some of the highlights…

Event: Alpine Christmas 
Date: 22 November until 2 January
Location: Annecy

Christmas starts early in Annecy, with the old town lit up from late November. Alongside the various markets, you will find an outdoor ice skating rink, Santa’s village, a Christmas food market and a programme of concerts. Check out the tourist office for details as they become available, and take a look at our blog post on Annecy at Christmas.

Event: LCZ Freeski Film
Date: 4 December
Location: La Clusaz

Join the local community from 18h30 for a fun-filled screening of the latest LCZ films! You will be guaranteed a good evening in the company of some of the best riders in the area, with fun prizes to be won throughout the event. 

Event: Rock On Snow
Date: 10 – 12 December
Location: La Clusaz

Try out all the latest snowboard gear at this trade show – all the top brands and retailers will be here. It’s a great chance to try before you buy, while enjoying the music and a great party atmosphere.

Event: Biathlon World Cup
Date: 13 – 19 December
Location: Le Grand Bornand

The French stage of the Biathlon World Cup tour takes place at the Sylvie Becaert stadium, and with over 62,000 spectators set to attend, expect a bit of a party! 

Event: Ice Skating Gala
Date: 19 December
Location: La Clusaz

From 18h30, the ice rink in La Clusaz will be hosting the annual ice skating gala as part of the local Christmas Pestacles event! With colourful outfits and great music, you can be sure to enjoy a great evening around the ice.

Event: Christmas Cheer
Date: 19 – 24 December
Location: Manigod

There’s a full festive programme from 11h to 19h every day in the run-up to Christmas Day in Manigod. As well as a Christmas market, there’s marshmallow parties, sledging, Christmas concerts and, of course, the arrival of Santa himself. Please check the website for more details of the programme. 

Event: Pestacles du Père Noël 
Date: 20 – 31 December
Location: La Clusaz

This fabulous street festival has been going for over 20 years and is one of the biggest in the Alps. The village is transformed into a festive wonderland for a celebration of Christmas, with something for all ages. Father Christmas arrives at Le Bossonnet on Christmas Eve and parades down to the church. Expect magicians, puppet shows, story-telling and music throughout the village.

Join instructors from ESF for this torchlit descent at 17h30 (2* ski level). Afterwards, there’s mulled wine and hot chocolate for everyone.

Event: Christmas in Le Grand Bornand Chinaillon
Date: 24 December
Location: Chinaillon, Le Grand Bornand

A magical evening that ends with the arrival of Father Christmas himself! The fun starts at 16h, with illuminations, street performances, music, a live nativity scene, musical games, creative workshops, and the big man himself will make an appearance at the tourism office at 18h30 There will also be refreshments and Christmas snacks on site. Contact the tourist office for the full programme.

Event: Gospel Angel Concert 
Date: 24 December
Location: Le Grand Bornand

Come and watch the Gospel Angel Band as they revisit the gospel repertoire, bringing together a range of musical types from blues to folk and country music. 

Event: Ice Sculpture Demonstration 
Date: 31 December
Location: Chinaillon, Le Grand Bornand

Join local craftsman Valentin for an ice sculpture demonstration on New Year’s Eve from 17h.

Event: New Year’s Eve party
Date: 31 December
Location: Le Grand Bornand 

There’s music, fireworks, as well as a food and drink display organised by the Ski Club Association as the village welcomes in the New Year. The party starts at 18h30 – find out more on the tourism website!

Celebrate the New Year with night skiing on the slopes at La Croix Fry from 17h30, and then party until midnight. Expect a festive and musical atmosphere, followed by fireworks to welcome in 2022!

January

Event: Torchlit descent
Date: 3 January
Location: La Clusaz

If you are over 15 you can take part in this fantastic torchlit descent down La Clusaz’s slopes in the company of the ESF instructors. Expect welcome drinks and great memories!

Join instructors from the ESF for this torchlit descent at 17h30 (2* ski level). Afterwards, there’s mulled wine and hot chocolate for everyone.

Event: Paret Championships
Date: 7 & 21 January
Location: Manigod

Competitors of all ages take part in this thrilling but fun evening competition on Manigod’s traditional paret sledge. The fun takes place at La Croix Fry or Merdassier – check the website for full details. 

Event: Le Belier Blanc Trail
Date: 8 January
Location: La Clusaz

More than 4,500 runners and walkers are expected to take part in this annual trail. There’s an 8km snowshoe trek, as well as the 11km White trail for runners. There’s a hot meal for all the competitors when they arrive back in the village at the end of the course. If you’re not taking part, there’s still plenty of entertainment to enjoy. Date: From 8 January to 12 March
Location: Le Grand Bornand

Learn how to ski with these introductory sessions offered by the ESF instructors. You can also try wheelchair skiing, handiskiing and other accessible skiing methods and enjoy free ski equipment. The sessions are held every Saturday between 18h30 and 20h.

February

Event: Guided Tour of Chinaillon’s Old Village
Date: All month-long
Location: Chinaillon, Le Grand Bornand

Discover Chinaillon’s historic village dating back to the 17th century, as well as the development of the ski resort. Tours are held every Thursday between 10h and 11h30. 

Event: Free Ski Lessons
Date: All month-long
Location: Le Grand Bornand

Learn how to ski with these introductory sessions offered by the ESF instructors. You can also try wheelchair skiing, handiskiing and other accessible skiing methods and enjoy free ski equipment. The sessions are held every Saturday between 18h30 and 20h.

Event: LCZ Freestyle Week
Date: 1 – 5 February
Location: La Clusaz

Freestyle has a great history in La Clusaz, which is home to champions such as Edgar Grospiron and Candide Thovex. The LCZ Freestyle Week is a great opportunity to see and marvel at the talents of some of the best freestyle skiers.

Event: Paret Championships
Date: 4 & 18 February
Location: Manigod

Competitors of all ages take part in this thrilling evening competition on Manigod’s traditional paret sledge. The fun takes place at La Croix Fry or Merdassier – check the website for full details. 

Event: Fire Show
Date: From 10 February
Location: Place de l’Église, La Clusaz

Every Thursday at 18h30, you can make your way down to La Clusaz’s Church Square to enjoy an adrenaline-filled night filled with different acrobatics – with fire!

Join local craftsman Valentin for an ice sculpture demonstration, each Friday from 18h.

Event: Ski School Show
Date: 16 & 23 February
Location: Le Grand Bornand

The ESF instructors put on a fabulous show demonstrating the evolution of skiing from the 1950s to the current day. Starts at 18h45.

Event: The Star of Manigod
Date: 23 February
Location: Col de Merdassier, Manigod

Meet on the slopes at 15h for an afternoon and evening of fun. Try out handiski and paret sledging, and enjoy the music and a marshmallow party. Once darkness falls, there’s a torchlit descent organised by the ESF instructors, followed by fireworks. If you’re hungry, choose from crepes, soup or tartiflette.

Event: Carnival
Date: 1 March
Location: La Clusaz

This is one of the highlights of the winter season in La Clusaz, for guests and residents. The fun starts at 19h, when ski instructors and guides take part in a fancy dress parade through the village. There’s plenty of music, and, of course, a firework finale.

Event: Fire Show 
Date: 3 March
Location: La Clusaz

Make your way down to La Clusaz’s Church Square to enjoy an adrenaline-filled night filled with different acrobatics – with fire! Starts at 18h30.

Event: Suly Ski trail
Date: 6 March
Location: Manigod

A unique course combining trail running and Alpine skiing between Thones and Manigod. There are three courses, and you can enter on your own or as part of a relay team. To register, and for more details, check the website. 

Event: Paret Championships 
Date: 4 & 19 March
Location: Manigod

Competitors of all ages take part in this thrilling evening competition on Manigod’s traditional paret sledge – once used by children to get home from school. The fun takes place at La Croix Fry or Merdassier – check the website for full details. 

Event: Venetian Carnival
Date: 11 – 13 March
Location: Annecy

The canals of Annecy are the backdrop for the annual Venetian Carnival, when hundreds of extravagantly costumed characters promenade through the medieval town. Don’t forget your camera!

Event: La Balme Derby 
Date: 12 March
Location: La Clusaz

This crazy freestyle 1200m race is open to over 18s – register online. Helmets and avalanche detectors are compulsory. Stick around after the race for the awards ceremony and a giant tartiflette.

Event: Glisse en Coeur
Date: 18 – 20 March
Location: Chinaillon, Le Grand Bornand

It’s 24-hour non-stop skiing and music at this charity event, which has been running for 13 years now, raising more than €2m for children with mental health problems. For the latest news on the events and music line-up, go to the website.

Event: Good Vibes Week 
Date: 21 – 25 March
Location: La Clusaz

Come along and discover various forms of yoga at this five-day well-being event for all ages. There’s also meditation, massage, essential oils and much more to explore. Check the website for more details of the programme.

Event: Digital Summits 
Date: 28 – 30 March
Location: La Clusaz

Combine skiing with this three-day digital marketing and information event, with masterclasses, workshops and conferences. And when the hard work is over, there’s plenty of entertainment laid on in the evenings. Check out the website for the programme, and the list of speakers.

Event: Radiomeuh Circus Festival
Date: 30 March to 3 April
Location: La Clusaz

This annual festival is organised by Radiomeuh, an online radio station based in La Clusaz with 3.3 million listeners around the world. Over the three evenings, the circus tent hosts about 10 acts, with more going on at restaurants and on the pistes. Check out the website for the line-up nearer the date.

Event: Annecy Semi-Marathon 
Date: 17 April
Location: Lake Annecy

There could hardly be a more spectacular setting for a marathon, between the snow-capped mountains and the turquoise waters of Lake Annecy. As well as the main event, there’s a half marathon and races for children aged between seven and 15. The marathon route also takes in the villages of Sevrier, Saint-Jorioz, Duingt and Doussard. Even if you’re not taking part, it’s a great spectacle, with music and a great party atmosphere. Click here for more information.

Event: Easter Concert 
Date: 18 April
Location: La Clusaz

Make your way down to Church Square in La Clusaz for a free performance by the Harmonie de La Clusaz, and enjoy a traditional welcome drink with the locals. 

Event: Defi Foly 
Date: 24 April
Location: Lac des Confins, La Clusaz

Every year since 1987, 150 of the area’s craziest skiers have headed for the Lac des Confins to mark the end of the ski season in La Clusaz. The idea is to ski down the hill and see how far you can get across the icy lake before you sink, and are rescued by boat. The record is 155m, set by Philippe Troubat in 2010. If you think you can beat that, register at the website below.  It’s a great day for spectators too – bring a picnic and grab a good spot on the hillside for this day-long event.
