Why choose the Mont-Blanc area for your autumn hiking holiday?

Vibrant colours and a peaceful atmosphere

Hiking is one of the best ways to enjoy the wonderful autumn colours in the mountains. The forests are adorned with bright yellows, scarlet reds and flamboyant oranges, contrasting with the peaks which are already dusted with snow.

The trails of the Mont-Blanc massif will take you through woods and alpine pastures, climbing higher and higher to get the best views of this picture-postcard scenery. Hiking in the Alps is the perfect activity for visitors looking to recharge their batteries in spectacular landscapes.

Fewer crowds, a better experience

After the hustle and bustle of the summer holidays and before the winter rush, the Alps calm down in autumn. Visitors can look forward to a more intimate, unspoilt experience, when every hike becomes a special moment in the presence of the majestic Mont Blanc.

Fewer crowds in the resorts means more peace on the trails, the opportunity to admire the breathtaking views at your own pace and to savour every moment. It is also an opportunity to observe wildlife and feel at one with nature.

The seven best walks in Évasion Mont-Blanc

Family-friendly – Dard waterfall

Distance: 2km
Time: 45 minutes
Elevation gain: 100m
Departure point: Tourist office in La Giettaz

Just a stone’s throw from La Giettaz, the hike to the Dard waterfall is an ideal choice if you’re visiting the Mont-Blanc region in autumn. Accessible to the whole family, it follows a peaceful little path along the meandering Nant du Dard stream, through woods and undergrowth.

At the end of the walk, the nearly 70-metre waterfall reveals itself in all its splendour, offering a breathtaking display. The locals call it the “bride’s veil” because of its grace and unique charm.

Family-friendly – Around the Lac Vert

Distance: 3km
Time: 1hr
Elevation gain: 100m
Departure point: Passy Plaine-Joux car park

The Lac Vert, named for its emerald green waters that reflect Mont Blanc, is perfect for an autumn walk with the family. This easy route is dotted with information panels, allowing you to learn more about the region’s flora, fauna and landscape.

The glorious autumn shades of the surrounding trees contrast with the clear waters, creating a riot of colours. This tranquil walk combines a change of scenery with discovery, in the heart of a listed natural site.

Easy – Belle au Bois waterfall

Distance: 1.3km
Time: 1hr 30
Elevation gain: 150m
Departure point: Place de la Résistance, Megève

In the heart of a forest near the centre of Megève, you’ll find the Belle au Bois waterfall. Easy to get to after a short walk through woodland and streams, it is particularly beautiful in the autumn, when the clear waters reflect the flamboyant colours of the trees. However, some sections of the path can be steep and slippery: good footwear is essential and access is not recommended for young children.

Easy – Cheminée des Fées loop

Distance: 6.6km
Time: 3hrs 30
Elevation gain: 590m
Departure point: Saint-Gervais-les-Bains

Among the best autumn hikes in the Évasion Mont-Blanc area, the Cheminée des Fées loop stands out for its cultural interest. This easy route invites you to discover the natural and historical heritage of Saint-Gervais.

Highlights along the way include the Notre-Dame des Alpes church, the village’s thermal spa and, above all, the famous Cheminée des Fées (Fairy Chimney), an impressive natural column nearly 40 metres high topped by a huge rock.

Difficult – Croix des Salles (with return at sunset)

Distance: 8km
Time: 2hr 30
Elevation gain: 430m
Departure point: Cuchet car park, Combloux

The hike to Croix des Salles, between Combloux and Megève, explores the Alpine panorama of the Mont-Blanc range, the Aravis and the Aiguilles de Varens. The view is particularly magical at sunset, when the last rays of light illuminate the peaks.

Starting from the Cuchet car park, the trail passes the Chalet de la Vieille and the Alpage de Beauregard to reach the Croix des Salles. The descent is easy, but it is best to take a torch and warm clothing if you are returning at dusk.

Expert – Ascent to Petit and Grand Croisse Baulet

Distance: 18km
Time: 5hr 30
Elevation gain: 960m
Departure point: Cuchet car park, Combloux

The ascent of the Petit and Grand Croisse Baulet peaks is one of the most spectacular autumn hikes in the Évasion Mont-Blanc area. This route is reserved for experienced and physically fit hikers, as it is 18km long and rises 960m over ridges and steep trails.

But the effort is well worth it: from the summit of Grand Croisse Baulet at an altitude of 2,236 metres, the view of the Aravis and Mont Blanc is spectacular.

Expert – Mont Joly ascent

Distance: 17km
Time: 8hrs
Elevation gain: 1300m
Departure point: Le Planellet

The ascent of Mont Joly is another must-see excursion for experienced hikers. Rising to an altitude of 2,525 metres, this peak offers one of the most beautiful views of the Aravis, Mont Blanc, Les Bauges and Beaufortain.

The route crosses mountain pastures and rocky ridges, requiring a certain level of fitness and experience. However, this challenging climb promises breathtaking views and will leave you with lasting memories of the majestic autumn landscapes.

Practical advice for hiking in autumn

  • High-top hiking boots: to protect your ankles and provide grip on wet paths.
  • Technical socks: breathable, anti-chafing, to keep your feet warm.
  • Breathable base layer: long-sleeved technical T-shirt to wick away perspiration.
  • Fleece or insulating layer: to put on or take off depending on the temperature.
  • Waterproof and windproof jacket: essential against rain, fog or gusts of wind.
  • Water-repellent hiking trousers: more suitable than shorts in autumn.
  • Hat or headband: because heat escapes quickly through the head.
  • Lightweight gloves: to protect against the cold in the morning or at altitude.
  • Sunglasses and sun cream: the sun remains strong in the mountains, even when it is behind the clouds.

Preparing for your hike

It is essential to be well prepared for your hike so that you can enjoy it to the fullest. Choose a route that is suitable for your group’s level, so that everyone can enjoy themselves. Check the weather forecast, as rain or early snow can make some trails dangerous.

Also make sure the route is passable and safe. Finally, always take a reliable route map with you: download your itinerary onto an app such as Komoot, Whympr or Iphigénie, or follow it on a paper map.

Safety advice

Hiking in the mountains requires a few essential safety precautions

Firstly, always take enough food and water with you, as the effort and altitude could tire you faster than you might think. Set off early in the morning to avoid being caught out by the failing light in the evening, or bring headlamps with you.

It is essential to wear sunscreen, as the sun is intense even in autumn. Bring a first aid kit and a survival blanket, which can be invaluable in case of unforeseen circumstances. Finally, make sure that every member of the group knows the route: this can be crucial if someone needs to call for help.
