When planning your trip, it’s good to have an idea of the weather in the 3 Vallées throughout the year. And as you can see from the graph above, rainfall varies significantly from one month to the next, with May typically being the wettest month.

During the winter season, it’s highly likely for precipitation to be in the form of snow, especially due to the high altitude of some resorts. Luckily, this creates excellent skiing conditions, one of the main reasons the 3 Vallées is so popular.

Similarly, if you plan on visiting the 3 Vallées in summer, you can expect to experience warm and sunny days that gradually become cooler as autumn approaches.

However, weather can be extreme in the Alps, and conditions can change in an instant, with rain storms occurring at any time of year. Therefore, it’s a good idea to have a bank of rainy-day activities to turn to if the weather isn’t so good.

Let’s take a look at the top picks…

Whether you prefer hot stone massages, facials, swimming or simply soaking in a hot tub, there’s a spa that will cater to your needs. So why not treat yourself to a day of pampering and self-care the next time the rain starts pouring down?

4. Go ice skating

Ice skating is another great choice of activity when the weather turns bad, especially during the colder months.

There are two indoor ice skating rinks you can head to throughout your holiday in the 3 Vallées: one in Courchevel and the other in Méribel.

Just make sure to check the websites for more details on opening times, as these may differ depending on the time of year you visit.

5. See a film at the cinema

A trip to the cinema is a go-to plan on a rainy day! Shelter from the wet weather and cosy up with one of the latest releases at the cinema in Méribel or Val Thorens.

Make sure to look out for VO or VOST showings for English films – these will be shown in the original language. If you’re not sure, ask at the tourist office or the cinema itself.

6. Discover the local culture

Rainy days are the perfect opportunity to visit a museum and learn all about local culture and traditions. And luckily, there are a few different heritage sites that you can explore whilst you wait for the rain showers to pass.

  1. Museum of Les Allues – set in an old village house, this modest museum recounts the local customs and traditions of the valley.
  2. Eglise Notre Dame de la Vie, Saint Martin de Belleville – a small, traditional church built in the 17th century showcasing Savoyard Baroque Art.
  3. Maison de l’abeille noire et de la nature, Saint Martin de Belleville – come and learn about the European dark bee, its origins, habitat and routine at this fun and interactive exhibition.
  4. Museum of Saint-Martin-de-Belleville – located in a converted farmhouse, this museum shares 150 years of rich history in the Vallée des Belleville.

In Courchevel, shopping is an activity that can’t be missed!

This luxurious resort town is famous for its designer shops and boutiques, making it an ideal destination for fashion enthusiasts. Even on a rainy day, exploring the retail scene is a worthwhile experience.

Whether you’re in search of the latest designer handbag or a distinctive piece of jewellery, Courchevel is the perfect place to treat yourself to a little retail therapy.

(Do note, during spring and autumn, some shops temporarily close for the off-season.)

Looking for a fun indoor activity on a rainy day that everyone can take part in? Head over to the bowling alley in Val Thorens, Méribel or Courchevel.

Not only can you stay warm and dry, but you can also enjoy some friendly competition and grab a drink from the bar while you play.

If bowling isn’t your thing, there are plenty of arcade games to try if you prefer.

9. Try indoor climbing

Climbing is an excellent way to stay active and entertained, and even though the weather may not be perfect, you don’t have to let that stop you!

The indoor climbing facilities in Méribel are top-notch, providing a challenging and engaging experience for climbers of all skill levels. Plus, the safe and controlled environment makes it an ideal activity for families with children or beginners who are just starting out.
