Could ski in /ski out be a good option for your winter holiday?
Being able to ski to and from the front door of the chalet is obviously the ideal for many skiers. Could a ski in / ski out chalet be a good choice for your next La Clusaz ski holiday for non-skiers too?
We asked the opinion of our sales team, spoke to some of our owners and checked guest feedback on this topic, at five of our ski in/ski out La Clusaz chalets. Read on to find out.
*To qualify properties must be on the piste or within 200m of the piste.
Get to first lifts with as little fuss and stress as possible!
Keen skiers can set their alarms a little later than most resort guests, take their time over breakfast, then suit up and boot up, before stepping onto the piste and getting going.
Watching skiers negotiate their way down the Coeur du Village run, or the piste-bashers preparing the ski runs for the following day from the private terrace of Chalet Panoramic La Clusaz is fun for all.
++++ All guests
For a grandstand view of the New Year fireworks, the torchlit descents by ski monitors, the weekly paret sessions, or for every day star gazing and people watching, Chalet Panoramic has the ideal location.
As well as being in the heart of the ski action, ‘Pano’ is just above the road into La Clusaz from the Col des Aravis, opposite the hugely popular La Ferme restaurant and 600m from the top of La Clusaz village. There’s also a ski bus stop within metres of the chalet.
Relax on the private terrace (which is secure for younger children and pets), and take a dip in the outdoor jacuzzi. Six parets are available for guest use in the ski room as well as boot warmers, and it’s all literally less than 20 steps from the piste. Chalet Panoramic is also in close proximity to some of La Clusaz’s finest on-piste cafes and restaurants.
Staying on a green or blue piste can mean that by the end of the holiday even beginners will be able to ski back to the front door with confidence.
Do you remember that sense of achievement the first time you were able to ski to a specific location, instead of repeating instructions to develop or improve technique? Renting a ski in/ski out property can gently motivate beginners to make great progress – reaching home safely, efficiently and under your own steam is incredibly satisfying.
Located below the forest on the blue Guy Perillat piste between Beauregard, and the ice rink (Patinoire) Chalet Timan boasts magical views across La Clusaz village towards La Balme.
++++ All guests
Chalet Timan is situated just behind the Route des Riondes. At 700m from the Coeur du village, at the ice rink end of La Clusaz, and 150m from the ski bus, heading out on foot, by bus, or in the car is not normally an issue. Guests can easily take the morning – or the day – off to relax at the chalet without feeling isolated or being car dependent. The Patinoire end of the village is the starting point for the Patinoire, and the Beauregard telecabins, both of which carry pedestrians as well as skiers. Chalet Timan is also handy for the Tourist Office, the church, supermarkets and of course restaurants, bars, cafes, shops and boutiques. The weekly market is also located at this end of the village.
A ski in/ski out chalet means guests can easily head back to base to change kit if conditions change, or when feeling hungry, tired or cold!
Some skiers or snowboarders like to change gear and clothing, especially in changeable weather conditions, or if they are trying out new equipment prior to purchase. Being able to ski home at the end of the day without accessing busy roads, or full to bursting ski buses also has its appeal. Rather than heading for the nearest cafe or restaurant, younger children or beginners can be dropped back at the chalet easily if they get too cold, tired, hungry, or just need to take a break.
Lodge les Fougeres La Clusaz is a short 200m walk from the ski bus in one direction, or the blue La Ruade run down from the Cret du Merle to the patinoire in another. At 1km from the village by road, the chalet is close to some great on piste restaurants and bars.
++++ All guests
All guests can get around independently from this lovely chalet – skiers can easily head out to the piste, while non skiers can nip out for lunch, enjoy the facilities or catch up on work. The views across to Beauregard and to Etale are gorgeous, as is relaxing in the sunken hot tub on the deck.
Your chalet manager will be happy to advise you on where to buy either single use tickets or weekly passes giving access to the telecabins and lifts, which carry pedestrians as well as skiers, so that non skiing guests can head into the mountains to take a snowshoe walk, a sleigh ride, or simply take a coffee break in the sunshine high up in the majestic Aravis mountain range. You can find more details here. Everyone should make time to stop and take in this beautiful part of the French Alps at least once during their winter holiday!
Guests can ski to their ski lessons, on time, and with a minimum of fuss.
Once everyone in the group is confident enough to ski to their lessons, being based in an on-piste chalet means that, with a little planning, everyone can get to where they need to be, at the right time, with the minimum of fuss and stress, on skis! Once the kids are taken care of, parents could take lessons or a guided ski themselves, blast around the resort, or spy on the kids’ progress from a distance, whichever they prefer, before it’s time to regroup for more family time!
Lodge le Grizzly La Clusaz is at the bottom of the gentle green run Le Champ Bleu, perfect for beginners. The chalet is nestled in the trees, above the main road between La Clusaz and Etale, and the garden and outdoor space provide great sledging and snowman building opportunities!
++++ All guests
The location of Lodge Le Grizzly means that grandparents and parents will be able to watch the progress of the kids in ski lessons without cramping their style! See what they’ve learned from the end of the piste or from the terrace, depending on how much snow there is! The chalet is 500m from the village and there is a ski bus stop 150m away, so it couldn’t be simpler to head into town for lunch, go ice skating, swimming or to the cinema.
No need for a ski bus or for clearing the snow off the car!
There’s no need to dig the car out, or take the ski bus to be first in the queue for the lifts when staying at a ski in/ski out chalet like La Ferme a Juju.
La Ferme a Juju is situated at the bottom of the blue Bossonet piste, just 50m from the Bossonet lifts and parking, as well as the ski school meeting point. Many guests holiday here without a car, or park it up on arrival and don’t use it all week.
++++ All guests
La Ferme a Juju is perched just above the roundabout at the top of the village, meaning that all guests have only a short walk to the swimming pool, the cinema, the bowling alley, a choice of wellness centres, and the many other shops, boutiques, cafes, bars and restaurants La Clusaz has to offer.
With a hammam indoors and a jacuzzi outdoors, non skiing guests can have just as much fun as skiers when staying at La Ferme a Juju. If guests want to visit another part of the Aravis the ski bus stop is 150m away.
Some other honourable mentions:
Skiers staying at Chalet Patagonia can either pick up the green Le Var liaison between La Balme and Bossonet, or hop on the ski bus which stops outside the chalet. Non skiing guests can watch skiers and cross country skiers heading back towards town from the hot tub, the terrace or the lounge.
Chalet Batieu is situated just above L’Envers, the blue run linking L’Etale to the Patinoire lift. In fact it’s so close to this crucial gentle liaison to La Clusaz that there is a snow cannon in the garden! There are stunning views up towards the Col des Aravis from the hot tub, terrace and balcony.
As seen from the photo, semi-detached Chalet Tilumi is opposite the Bossonnet lift at the top of La Clusaz village, so ideal for skiers and non skiers alike.
From the hot tub on the balcony, guests at Cristal des Neiges have great views, and a short 150m walk to join the L’Envers blue run between Etale and the ice rink in La Clusaz. Non skiing guests have a slightly longer 300m walk to the ski bus stop.
The addition of Chalet Le Panoramic La Clusaz to OVO Network for Christmas 2020 brings our total of ski in/ski out chalets in this part of the Aravis to 17. To see more ski in/ski out chalets in La Clusaz and also our other popular destinations of Grand Bornand, Chinaillon, Morzine and Les Gets, click here.
We are adding more new chalets all the time – this autumn/winter look out for Chalet Le Riparian – less than 50 m above the patinoire in La Clusaz, and Chalet Cosyneige – close to L’Envers. These and others are set to be available to rent during winter 2020/21.
Watch this space and look out for the ’New’ label.
Please note – Be aware that ease of access to pistes is snow dependent. Please check the Google map, photos, and information on the property website to be sure your group will be able to cope with the ski level required. While managing access is a great motivator, not being able to manage can be very scary and demotivating, especially for beginners!
