What’s on - Summer 2017

There’s so much going on in Annecy and the Alps over the summer months. Sporting events, carnivals, fireworks, film festivals and more. Take a look at just some of the fabulous events you can look forward to this summer…

Summer or winter, these events take place throughout the year.

 Annecy Old Town Market

Tuesday, Friday & Sunday 7am - 1pm

Immerse yourself in the colour, scents and sounds of a traditional French market in Annecy’s historic old town. Find everything from cheese, meat, fish, fruit and vegetables to clothing, kitchen gadgets and street food. Friday’s market also has flowers.

 

 

 

Annecy Crafts, Arts & Flea Markets

Last Saturday of each month

The various craft, art and flea markets are fabulous to explore. From hand-made jewellery, clothing and furniture, to bric-a-brac, antiques and paintings, there’s plenty to choose from to take home!

 

 

 

La Clusaz Market

Every Monday 8am - noon

La Clusaz’s weekly market is a wonderful place to explore whether you’re visiting in winter or summer. Fresh produce, local handicrafts, clothing, cheeses, jewellery and more are all available, plus a fabulous atmosphere.

 

Le Grand Bornand Market

Every Wednesday 8am - noon

Taking place throughout the year, don’t miss a visit to the market in Le Grand Bornand. With local crafts, cheeses, meats, fruit and vegetables, clothes and more on sale, it’s a great place to explore.

The following events take place through the summer season.

 

Visit Lorette’s Farm - Plateau de Beauregard

Every day

Find out all about life on an Alpine farm, tour the house and stay as long as you like. The cows are in the fields all day and come back at 3pm for milking. Guided tours take place at 2.30pm every day except Sunday, but must be booked in advance. 6 € adult / 4 € child (under 13) / free under four

Tour of the town with Gisele - La Clusaz

Every day (July 6 - August 21)

Discover the heritage, legends and secrets of La Clusaz with an official guide. Starts at 9.45am - book at the tourist office at least a day in advance. Adults 5€, Children 3€, free for children under three.

 

 

 

Garden visit Au Confin des Sens (To the limits of the senses) - La Clusaz

Tuesdays and Thursdays (July 1 - September 15)

Use all five senses to discover the garden at Gite le Vieux Madrier, which features vegetables, flowers, aromatic and medicinal plants. Free of charge.

 

Farm visit, Aravis Rando - La Clusaz

Every Friday (July 7 - September 1)

Meet the farmers at an Alpine farm and find out how Reblochon, the famous local cheese, is made. Book in advance and meet at the tourist office at 2pm. Adults 8€, children 5€

 

Food tasting on a farm, L’Alpage du Croix - Le Grand Bornand

Every Thursday, 22 June to 7 September

Taste local products on a traditional farm - enjoy Reblochon cheese, homemade jams, bread, pastries, butter and milk. Book up to a day before your visit - Adults 9,50€, child (10 years) 6€. Minimum age 1 year.

Heritage workshop - Build a farm - Le Grand Bornand

Every Monday, 10 July - 20 August 2-3pm

Young would-be carpenters aged from six to 12 are invited to the Heritage House, where they can learn how to build a farm. The cost is 5€ per child, with the third child in every family going free.

 

 

 

Gourmet walk - Le Grand Bornand

Tuesdays, 10 July to 18 August, 10.15am to 11.45am

Discover Le Grand Bornand on foot with an expert guide, followed by a tasting of local products at the Maison du Patrimoine, offered by shopkeepers and farmers of Le Grand Bornand. Adults 5.50€, children (6-12) 3€. Book at the tourist office by 4.30pm on the day before your visit.

 

Paperchase - Le Grand Bornand

Discover the heritage and traditions of Le Grand Bornand on this paperchase - six wooden boxes have been placed around the village and it’s up to you to solve the riddles to find them. For children aged six to 12, each team must be supervised by an adult, entry is 3€. Book before 5pm on Tuesdays.

Golf and cocktails - Golf Le Rocher Blanc, Le Grand Bornand

Mondays and Wednesdays, from 3 July to 30 August

Enjoy an introductory golf session from 5pm, followed by an aperitif and a chance to try some local produce. Adults 12€, children aged 7-15 years 8€.

 

 

Deambule Festival des Paysages, Annecy

Until October 1

Discover art installations, music and exhibitions as you walk through this beautiful medieval town. A route is suggested on the website so that you can make sure you don’t miss anything. It’s a great way to explore parts of the town that you might otherwise miss. And it’s free!

Le Grand Bornand

Discover farm life, taste Reblochon cheese and see it made. Adults 5€, children (6-12 years) 2.80€, Free for children under 6. Book at the tourist office the day before the 2.15pm visit.

 

 

Until 6 May - Petit Patapon

Cran-Gevrier, Annecy

With shows, stories, games, books, workshops and more this is a fun event for all the family. The 10th year of Petit Patapon, the theme of the event this year is travel, so expect plenty of planes, trains and automobiles!

Saturdays - Migrate up the mountain!

Le Grand Bornand

Join the Alpine farmers as they move their Abondance cattle and goats up into the summer pastures and learn about life on the farm. Please check times when you book, as they are dependent on the weather. Adults 6€, children aged 6-12 2€. Children aged under 6 go free, but please note that the procession moves at the speed of the animals!

 

Organ & Voice Concert

Le Grand Bornand

Sit back, relax and enjoy the beautiful sound of an organ recital in the peaceful setting of Le Grand Bornand church, along with wonderful singing to accompany the music. A very special experience to enjoy.

 

 

Les Vocales de Thones

Thones and Le Grand Bornand

Enjoy a week of spectacular music and song in the towns of Thones and Le Grand Bornand. From the opening concert with performances by Cantathônes and the Alpes Symphony Orchestra, to electronic Jazz, and talented performers such as Imany and MozART Group there’s plenty to enjoy.

Medievals d’Alby

Alby sur Cheran

A weekend of medieval fun in the town of Alby sur Cheran near Annecy. Watch re-enactments of battles, with knights on horseback challenging each other to duels, and discover what it was like to live in medieval times. Entry 5€ for adults, free for children up to 10 years old.

Accordion all night long

Le Grand Bornand

A dinner dance with accordion music in Espace Grand Bo, organised by the Accordeonistes du Val de Thones. Tickets for the event, which starts at 8pm, are 26€.

 

European Night of Museums

Le Grand Bornand

Find out about the history of Le Grand Bornand by lamplight on this nocturnal visit to the Heritage House. This event is free, but numbers are limited, so book in advance.

 

Salomon Gore-Tex Maxi Race

Annecy le Vieux

With over 5,000 runners from over 40 countries taking part, the Maxi-Race goes around Lake Annecy - via the mountains that surround it! There are eight routes, giving athletes of all levels the chance to participate in this celebration of trail running

 

Talloires Book Festival

Talloires

This welcoming literary gathering sees renowned authors and journalists take part in a range of events including book signings, discussions and radio broadcasts. With a children’s literature bookshop and literary cafes, there’s plenty to choose from.

The Gypaete trail run

Le Grand Bornand - Chinaillon

There are five courses for this event, with three of the starting points in Chinaillon. These courses range from 13km to 71km, with entry ranging from €17 to €70. There's even a circuit for pairs to compete (La Circaète binôme). Of course it’s free to watch!

Discover the wild plants of the Aravis

Auberge Nordique, Le Grand Bornand

Find out all about the plants that grow in the Aravis on this full-day walk in the mountains. Groups are a minimum of six and a maximum of 15, and the minimum age is 13 years old. Tickets are 35€, although a group rate is available for more than six people.

 

 

8th stage of the Criterium du Dauphine

Le Grand Bornand

The penultimate stage of this cycle race will pass through Le Grand Bornand, with competitors tackling the Col de la Colombiere - an epic climb of 11.7km, with a gradient of 5.8%. Free to watch.

 

 

Annecy International Animation Film Festival

Annecy

The Annecy International Animation Film Festival was created in 1960 and became an annual event in 1988. See the latest award-winning animated films, discover the next trends and meet directors and new talents. Films for more than 85 countries are screened at a number of theatres around the town from 10am to 11pm, with an open air screening on the Paquier every evening at 10.15pm

 

 

Roc des Alpes

La Clusaz

A huge mountain biking competition in a spectacular setting, Roc des Alpes is fun whether you’re participating or spectating. With shows, music, children’s activities, summer luge and much more, this is a great event for all the family.

 

 

Local Heritage Days

Le Grand Bornand

It’s open house at the heritage museum as part of Heritage Day - see an exhibition of flowers, a demonstration of wool spinning and the official opening of the exhibition. It’s free to visit the house, which is open from 10am to noon and 2-6pm.

24 June to 1 July - Back to Grand Bo paragliding competition

Le Grand Bornand

Amateur pilots join the best pilots in the world in this unique competition to see who can cover the greatest distance. Paragliders take off from the summit of Mont Lachat and try to fly as far as possible - all they have to do is take off and land in Le Grand Bornand and track their flight by GPS. Free to watch.

 

 

19th Cyclosportive

Le Grand Bornand

This cycle race organised by the Velo Club is a stage of the Challenge Haute Savoie. Starting from and finishing at the Espace Grand Bo from 7.55am, registration is €38, with an extra €12 for a meal ticket.

 

 

Friday 30 June to Sunday 2 July - Alpine Odyssey

Massif de Balme, La Clusaz

An eco-event that traces the path of a snowflake from La Balme in La Clusaz to Lake Annecy. Children from local schools join athletes in a series of sporting events that follow the water all the way down the mountain.

The night of churches

 

Explore the church from 9-10.30pm with a heritage guide, hear organ demonstrations and find out how the organ works. Free visit.

Belgian Paragliding Open

Le Grand Bornand

At least 100 pilots are expected at this week-long event. Flying starts on 2 July, after registration on the previous day, and take-off is from the top of Mont Lachat. Free to watch.

 

 

Jeep Festival

Manigod

See a range of vehicles including Jeeps and Dodges, demonstrations and food. Organised by L’amicale Jeep la Croix-Fry.

Firemen’s Ball

La Clusaz

This traditional event takes place every year on the eve of the national holiday and is free to residents and holiday guests. The parade starts at the Champ Giguet at 8pm and at 8.30pm the firefighters march from the town back to the field. A live concert by Captiv starts at 9pm, followed by fireworks.

 

 

National Day celebration

Le Chinaillon, Le Grand Bornand

An evening of entertainment, concerts, fireworks and dancing to celebrate the national day of France. The fun starts at 6.30pm and ends with fireworks at 10.30pm. The event is free so come along!

 

 

Musilac

Aix-les-Bains

It’s a bit further to go for this one, but it’s only an hour from Annecy and it’s worth the journey! This year there are four days of music, with headliners including Sting, Jamiroquai, Texas and Midnight Oil. Tickets range from 59€ for a one-day pass to €219 for a four-day pass with camping and an event pack including a T-shirt.

Mountain Festival

Le Grand Bornand

Enjoy a Savoyard meal on the village square and a light show on the mountains. The annual event is organised by the Mountain Rescue Team and the Local Guide company. The entertainment is free.

 

 

Aravis et Cies

Various locations

This five-day family event takes place across four villages. The Aravis becomes a huge outdoor playground. Activities are themed in each village: Cycling in La Clusaz; ropes in Le Grand Bornand; nature in Manigod and air in St Jean de Sixt. The cost is 15€ per person per week or €5 per person per day. For every two day passes you buy, get one free.

 

 

Picture trail

Le Grand Bornand

Look for 12 pictures placed throughout the village - each picture contains a clue. When you’ve solved all the clues you will find out the final meeting place! From 2-4.30pm. Entry is 3€ per person, free for children under 6.

Guided tour by lamplight

Le Grand Bornand

Enjoy a nighttime tour  and a quiz at the Heritage House, a restored farm building which dates from 1830. Learn a little about life in the 19th century and about the architecture of Le Grand Bornand. Entry is 5€ for adults and 3.30€ for children aged six to 12. Book at the Maison du Patrimoine.

20 July to 17 August, each Thursday - Gourmet walk in Chinaillon

Chinaillon, Le Grand Bornand

Discover the well-preserved old village of Chinaillon with Savoie Heritage Guides, followed by a tasting of local produce offered by shopkeepers and farmers. From 10.15 to 11.45am. See ancient chalets, the historic church and the wood-shingled roofs. Adults 5.50€, children (6-12) 3€. Book by 4.30pm the previous day.

 

 

The Eagle Trail

Manigod

Three challenges, all starting from Croix-Fry. They are a 26km trail with a climb of 1240m, a 11km trail with a 520m climb and a Nordic walking event.

 

 

Fête Champetre de Lormay

Bouchet valley - buses from Le Grand Bornand

Old traditions, trades and handcrafts are revisited at this country fair. Toss hay bales, find out how Reblochon is made, enjoy a delicious Savoyarde meal and dance the night away. Entertainment is free, the meal costs 15€ for adults and 10-13€ for a child.

 

 

Party at the Lac de la Cour

Chinaillon, Le Grand Bornands

Enjoy a picnic, music and a torchlight parade at this lakeside evening event. Take the Le Chatelet chairlift up and enjoy a torchlit walk back to Chinaillon - wear good walking shoes and don’t forget your picnic blanket. For ticket prices and to book, contact the tourist office.

 

 

Flute and organ concert

This free concert at the Eglise Notre Dame to l’Assomption starts at 9pm

 

 

La Soiree Champetre

Bossonet, La Clusaz

Discover the local heritage and food at this country fair, with the folk group Lou Socali. Discover how Reblochon is made - and taste it, try folk dancing and enjoy a Savoyard dinner. Tickets are €13 from the tourist office.

30 July - 4 August - Women’s open paragliding competition

Mont Lachat, Le Grand Bornand

The world’s best women paragliders, including 60 champions, meet in Le Grand Bornand for this open competition, which is free for spectators.

31 July - 1 August - Around the piano

Le Grand Bornand

This unique event takes place in the village’s traditional church, where international pianists will play on a Steinway Grand Concert piano from the company Dauville Annecy. The concerts are free to attend. There will also be a piano masterclass by Pascal Pasqualini for which tickets are 50€.

A weekend of shows, games and activities designed with children in mind, followed by a traditional dance, late into the night. Organised at the primary school, L’Ecole Cite Notre Dame.

 

 

Fete de l’Alpage

Chinaillon, Le Grand Bornand

A whole day of entertainment, including an ox-drawn wagon parade, a milking competition, a country-style meal and fireworks. Tickets for lunch are 13.50€ for adults, a dinner of tomme blanche is 9€. Free buses run all day, until 10.40pm.The fun takes place at the bottom of the Les Gettiers chairlift.

 

 

les Choeurs de France

A choir made up of more than 60 members from all over France gathers in Le Grand Bornand for this concert.

La Clusaz

A festival celebrating the history of local farming and the production of Reblochon. See how the cheese is made in the afternoon, and enjoy folk dancing, bread-making and a grand parade through the village. Free.

 

 

20th Cycle ascent Le Bouquetin

Le Grand Bornand/Col de la Colombiere

This timed climb of the Col de la Colombiere starts at 9am (registration from 7am). Organised by the Velo Club, it is open to anyone aged 16 and over. Entry is 12€ for cyclists but it’s free for spectators.

 

 

Festival of 15 August

Le Grand Bornand

The fun starts at 4pm with the cooking of a giant tartiflette - a Savoyard delicacy of potatoes, bacon and Reblochon cheese. Music and dancing follow, as well as a raffle. Entertainment is free but the meal should be booked at the tourist office. It costs 13€ for adults and 8€ for children under 10.

 

 

Au Bonheur des Momes

Le Grand Bornand

This children’s festival is the highlight of the summer for families - six days of entertainment including music, dance, workshops, games and puppet shows, as well as a green section, Don’t Touch my Planet. An access bracelet costs 5€ for a day or 20€ for a week. Shows at La Grenette are free but charges vary for workshops and indoor shows, for which it is advisable to book. The programme is available on the website.

Pyroconcerts

Talloires, Lake Annecy

Music and fireworks come together in a spectacular way at this series of concerts in the fairy-tale setting of Talloires. Music ranges from an Abba tribute night to a singalong, and is preceded at 8pm every evening with a “pre-concert” by folk rock singer Joshua Burnell.

 

Artisans market

La Clusaz

Discover some quality local products and see craftsmen and women at work at the Place de L’Eglise in La Clusaz. From 9am to 7pm.

 

 

Le Belier trail race

La Clusaz

One of the oldest trail races in Haute Savoie, three days of events have been arranged for the 32nd edition, which is open to runners, walkers, beginners and experts. Try out trail, hiking and Nordic walking products in the test village which has 2km and 5km circuits.

September

La Croix Fair

La Clusaz

Mountain farmers, shepherds and goat herders get together to celebrate the end of the summer and the return of the animals to the village. The cows parade to be judged and the winner of the best Reblochon cheese is decided. The day is rounded off with evening entertainment.

 

 

St Maurice Fair

Le Grand Bornand

This agricultural fair is a great day out for the family, with livestock and Reblochon competitions, animal parades, a communal lunch and a dinner designed to show off local produce and a dance in the evening.
