The OVO Network Review

If you are looking for an authentic farmhouse experience, and enjoy watching the world go by at a simple, more relaxed place, then Chalet L'Otavalo could be the place for you. Chalet L'Otavalo is a homely rustic chalet which is ideal for families with children.

The views across to La Tournette are breathtaking, and we really like the fact that the owners are happy to share their family farming lifestyle with their guests. The cows will be crossing the road to the milking shed twice a day!

The accommodation is on one floor of a renovated farmhouse, on a farm belonging to a family who have been in the village of Manigod for generations. So, no stairs to deal with, and the owners have retained the original low ceilings and small windows typical of farmhouses of this age.

There's plenty of room for children to let off steam in the fresh mountain air, and garden toys for children to use against a stunning Alpine backdrop.

Although the property seems delightfully rural, it's only 1km to the village of Manigod, and 7km to the ski station of La Croix Fry. In the summer, there are lovely walks around the valley from the door, and plenty of bike trails for cyclists.

Only one of the bedrooms has an en suite bedroom, there's also a separate shower room and two separate toilets.

There is a self - contained apartment in the basement of the farm occupied by the owner's brother, which has its own separate access.

“Discover this ancient home and make new memories”

Welcome to our home!

This chalet is typical of the mountain farms you will find in the Manigod area. We think it dates from the end of the 18th century.

It has been home to generations of farmers: the people and the animals lived under the same roof. The old farms were designed to do everything in the same place: looking after the animals; making Reblochon cheese; the storage of fodder and family life.

We've lived at this farm since the year 2000, before building our own chalet next door. We have renovated it room by room, and tried to keep the authenticity by revealing the old walls and decorating them with the old tools that we found in the barn: the harrow, the flail, the fork and the horse collar.

The old stable has been transformed into the new living room, the "front room" has been knocked into the kitchen, the animal area has become a bedroom. We've tried to keep as much of the original material as possible, to preserve the old character, even removing each layer of wallpaper and paint one by one, rolling back the years through previous restorations.

That is how we got back to the rough wood which revealed the true character of the chalet.

We had a lovely surprise when we renovated one of the bedrooms - we uncovered a piece of wood bearing the date 1734! Is that the date of construction? We can't be 100% sure, but if that is the case, it is one of the oldest houses in Manigod. At that time, it was common to re-use wood from other buildings to construct or alter chalets, using one piece of wood to replace something that was in need of repair, so the date on a piece of wood doesn't always correspond to the age of the building.

However, the plank was found in a well preserved and sheltered area of the barn, so it could very well be original.

This is just one recent story from this old chalet - now it's up to you to discover it and fill it with your own memories!

“Charming farmhouse chalet for families”

Friendly welcome and appreciated availability of the owners. Chalet in a well-equipped old farmhouse. Ground floor ideal for young children.

“I definitely would recommend the chalet and the area”

Laurence was very kind and helpful. She gave us a lot of good tips for hikes and restaurants in the area. The house is super cozy with a nice fire place and the whirlpool is perfect after an exhausting hike or bike trip, even better with the view of the mountains. Also fire wood was restored when we emptied it. All in all I definitely would recommend the chalet and the area, especially for bike riding and hiking. But also the regional specialities are excellent like reblochon cheese and the wines.
