The top spring hikes around Praz-de-Fort<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

1. Cabane d\u2019Orny via Saleinaz<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Distance:<\/strong> 10.6km
Elevation gain:<\/strong> 1258m<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hiking in the canton of Valais is often technical, and this route is proof of that. With over 1,000m of elevation gain from the starting point, it requires you to be in excellent physical shape. Some high-altitude stretches can be snow-covered, even in spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your destination is a refuge at 2,826m altitude, just below\u00a0the Orny glacier<\/strong>, overlooking a delightful mountain lake. This is a magical spot for a picnic, however, the refuge itself is only open during the summer months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Allow a full day for the round trip, taking the time to make the most of the panoramic view of the Portalet, and Aiguille d\u2019Argenti\u00e8re summits<\/strong>\u00a0as well as\u00a0the Trient glacier<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n

2. Saleinaz Hut<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This is a demanding hike to the Saleinaz hut,\u00a0a mountain refuge in the Mont-Blanc range,<\/strong> at 2,691m altitude. In Switzerland, mountain refuges are called cabanes<\/em> \u2013 huts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a winding ascent through the forest, along the Reuse de Saleinaz, you\u2019ll cross the river and the moraine with the aid of chains and metal rungs. This technical section gives the hike a via ferrata feel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then it\u2019s just a matter of negotiating an accumulation of rocks to reach the hut, with the Saleinaz glacier<\/strong>\u00a0keeping you company for the last few metres. You can admire it from a viewpoint about 20m behind the shelter.<\/p>\n\n\n

3. Loop from Praz-de-Fort to Issert<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This shorter, easier hike is a wonderful introduction to the\u00a0Praz-de-Fort region<\/strong>. You will come across several natural and architectural treasures as you wind along forest trails and country roads.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the centre of the resort, follow the banks of the Reuse de Saleinaz, then cross the Suplis forest, before reaching the commune of Issert. The Tour du Mont-Blanc trail leads up to the middle of the Champex ascent, before climbing through the woods. Enjoy breathtaking views of Mont V\u00e9lan and the Grand Combin<\/strong>, the second-highest peak in this part of Switzerland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your route ends at Le Chanton on the tarmac road, and then you can retire to the well-deserved comfort of your OVO Network chalet.<\/p>\n\n\n

4. Pointe d\u2019Orny (Champex-Lac)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Perched at an altitude of 3,269 m, the Pointe d\u2019Orny reveals a panorama from another world:\u00a0the glacial plateau of Trient<\/strong>, surrounded by the Aiguille du Tour, the Aiguille Purtscheller, the Grande and Petite Fourches, and the Aiguilles Dor\u00e9es.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This high-mountain circuit winds its way through the forest, before reaching a point overlooking the Combe d\u2019Orny at an altitude of 2,450 metres. After reaching the source of the Darbellay stream, the surreal green of the Lac d\u2019Orny with its glacier follows, then a second glacial lake, spread out at the foot of the Cabane d\u2019Orny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At 3,170m, you\u2019ll be greeted at the Cabane du Trient by Nikola Zaric\u2019s phantasmagorical sculptures\u00a0<\/strong>which seem to be keeping watch over the clouds. Return by the same route.<\/p>\n\n\n

5. Cabane de l\u2019A Neuve (La Fouly)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Hikes in the Praz-de-Fort region often follow rugged, high-altitude trails, revealing\u00a0the beauty of the Alps in springtime<\/strong>. This is very much true of this trail, which begins in the hamlet of La Fouly, just 8km from the resort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After passing through a coniferous forest, the path climbs gently between two reuses<\/em>, the name given to mountain streams in this region. At 2,000m, you will cross a boulder to find yourself in a picturesque, bucolic setting of heather and wild blueberries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The A Neuve hut awaits you at an altitude of 2,735m. Above you,\u00a0the silhouette of Mont Dolent<\/strong>\u00a0stands out against a chain of needle-like rocky protrusions.<\/p>\n\n\n

6. Mont Rogneux (Liddes)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This route to the summit of Mont Rogneux, which rises to 3,084m above sea level, passes through a variety of landscapes<\/strong>\u00a0with a rural flavour. The perfectly marked trail leaves the forest and runs alongside the Aron mountain stream, before reaching the scattered ruins of several abandoned mountain hamlets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0Col de Mille<\/strong>, at 2,471m, reveals a 360\u00ba panoramic view of Mont Br\u00fbl\u00e9, Catogne, the Grand Combin, the Aiguille d\u2019Argenti\u00e8re and the summit of Mont Rogneux, your destination for the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final section, however, is not easy to negotiate. You\u2019ll have to use your hands to climb boulders that are slippery with snow residue, even at the height of spring.<\/p>\n\n\n

7. Roc des Plines via the Saleinaz Valley<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This hike is without doubt the most demanding of this selection. Long and steep, with some off-trail sections, it requires previous hiking experience<\/strong>,\u00a0excellent physical fitness, and good quality shoes with spikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The landscapes you\u2019ll pass through will seem otherworldly. Climbing up a deep valley surrounded by needle-like granite protrusions, you\u2019ll come to\u00a0one of the wildest polar circuses<\/strong>\u00a0in the Mont-Blanc range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The view from the roc des Plines, at 3,293m, opens out onto the Aiguilles d\u2019Argenti\u00e8re, Grande Fourche and Portalet, with the Ravines Rousses glacier on the horizon. It\u2019s a setting that is awe-inspiring in its enormity, reminding hikers of their true place in the universe\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n
