The arrival of spring means you no longer have to fear the icy mountain winds. Expect sunnier days <\/strong>and milder temperatures<\/strong>, but don\u2019t forget to protect your eyes and skin from the sun\u2019s rays, reflected off the snow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And with longer days<\/strong>, you\u2019ll be able to spend more time on the slopes before nightfall. But if you want to ski in the afternoon, you\u2019ll need to choose a shaded slope, where the snow remains compact for longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fewer crowds<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

From the end of the February holidays, the region becomes less crowded<\/strong> and allows for a more relaxing experience. Spring brings quieter slopes<\/strong> and shorter queues<\/strong> at rental shops, ticket offices and ski lifts.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to make the most of skiing in springtime<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Because the temperatures are so different from those in winter, spring skiing requires a different approach.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t pack your big, padded ski suit, which will make you sweat unnecessarily. Dress more lightly and wear several layers of clothing, which you can remove as the day goes on, depending on the temperature. Don\u2019t forget a rucksack to store them in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sun can be harmful in the mountains. It\u2019s important to protect your skin with sun cream<\/strong> and your eyes with sunglasses<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While it\u2019s always a good idea to stay hydrated<\/strong> during physical exertion, this is all the more important in April when temperatures are warmer.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Differences between ski touring and downhill skiing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Ski touring is practised on ungroomed routes, both in the mountains and in ski areas. The skier doesn\u2019t just ski downhill, as in alpine skiing: he also goes uphill, using a special binding that lifts the heel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike downhill skiing, you\u2019ll spend most of your time going uphill.\u00a0 It\u2019s a much slower sport, giving you the chance to appreciate nature and the mountains at your own pace.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Good to know: <\/strong><\/strong>ski touring was originally called \u201cspring skiing<\/strong>\u201d because it was the best way to make the most of the last snow after the ski lifts had closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Level requirements and safety rules<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As with hiking, there are different types of trails, with varying degrees of difficulty<\/strong>. So you don\u2019t have to be in peak physical fitness to enjoy this sport.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, it is important to comply with strict safety rules<\/strong>, especially if you are going to tackle the high mountains. The peaks can be unpredictable, so it\u2019s a good idea to arrange a guide through your resort\u2019s \u201cBureau des Guides de Haute Montagne\u201d (High Mountain Guides Office), such as the Bureau des Guides des Aravis<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t forget to check the weather forecast for the risk of avalanches. Every day, M\u00e9t\u00e9o France publishes the \u201cBulletin d\u2019Estimation du Risque d\u2019Avalanche\u201d (Avalanche Risk Estimate Bulletin), giving a risk index on a scale of one to five.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many resorts offer safe ski-touring trails not far from the slopes. Although they lack the charm of the wilderness, they can be an excellent way of getting to grips with the activity, in complete safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Equipment for ski touring<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Touring skis are different from downhill skis. They must be fitted with bindings<\/strong> so that you can go uphill, as well as \u201cskins\u201d<\/strong>, which are glued to the underside of the skis. You\u2019ll also need poles<\/strong> and boots with inserts<\/strong>, different from those used for downhill skiing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re venturing into the high mountains, you\u2019ll need a safety kit <\/strong>including a shovel, probe and avalanche transceiver, so that you\u2019re prepared in the event of an avalanche.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Good to know: <\/strong><\/strong>all this equipment can be hired online or at the resort. If you\u2019re not sure what you need or how to use it, ask at your hire shop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In April, the crowds have gone but the snow is still there in most of the high-altitude resorts.
