Therefore, it\u2019s vital to be aware of the contact numbers to call in case of an emergency. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In this guide, we outline the different services and how to contact them in the event of:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>You or someone else experiencing an injury, illness or distress;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Being lost or trapped in difficult conditions;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>You or someone around you facing a potentially dangerous situation (severe weather conditions, landslide, risk of hypothermia, avalanche or animal attack).<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>In the demanding environment of the French Alps, emergencies are handled by three public services: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Police officers from the Republican Mountain Safety Companies (CRS); <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gendarmes from the Mountain Gendarmerie Platoons (PGM) and the High Mountain Gendarmerie Platoons (PGHM);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Firefighters who are members of the firefighters\u2019 mountain groups (GMSP) or reconnaissance and intervention groups in hazardous environments (GRIMP).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Within the Haute-Savoie region, the Association D\u00e9partementale des Soci\u00e9t\u00e9s de Secours en Montagne (which currently has some 550 volunteer rescuers) also supports the PGHM, CRS and GMPS units in mountain rescue operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, in ski resorts, safety and rescue operations are the responsibility of the local authorities and are carried out (for a fee) by the resort\u2019s ski patrol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-summer-emergency-numbers\">Summer emergency numbers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ovonetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-1-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"A rescue helicopter lands in the mountains\" class=\"wp-image-81964\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ovonetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-1-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.ovonetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ovonetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-1-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ovonetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-1-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.ovonetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-1-250x166.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.ovonetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-1-350x233.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.ovonetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-1-1140x759.jpg 1140w, https:\/\/www.ovonetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-1.jpg 1250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Rescue teams are trained to deal with all types of mountain emergencies. \u00a9 Minist\u00e8re de l\u2019Int\u00e9rieur <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-call-112\">Call 112<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>112 is a free emergency number accessible anywhere in Europe, 24 hours a day and can be used to contact the local services, determined by the caller\u2019s location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This number has many advantages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It works from a locked or SIM-free phone;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can dial it from a landline or mobile phone;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is the only number that works more reliably without a network;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The call is directed to the nearest emergency centre.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll need to give the person you\u2019re talking to complete and accurate information. To do this, the French fire department recommends the following steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>INTRODUCE YOURSELF<\/strong> \u2013 Provide your name and phone number.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>GIVE YOUR LOCATION<\/strong>  \u2013 Say where you are as precisely as possible: the area in which you are located (mountain range, summit) and the route you are taking. If possible, give GPS coordinates and altitude.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>DESCRIBE THE SITUATION<\/strong> \u2013 Specify the activity and circumstances of the accident, as well as the number of victims and the total number of people present. Describe the condition of the victim(s) and the actions taken.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>GIVE DETAILS OF THE INTERVENTION AREA<\/strong> \u2013 Describe the weather conditions in the area and the possibility of receiving a helicopter (if the area is clear or not\u2026). Indicate the type of clothing worn, and in particular the colour of the clothing, so that you can be clearly identified.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>ANSWER ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS<\/strong> \u2013 Rescue workers will be able to act more quickly and be better prepared for the intervention.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>REMAIN CONTACTABLE<\/strong> \u2013 Be sure to leave the line available so that you can be contacted again if necessary.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"block-ovo-cta-button\">\n  <div class=\"wp-block-button\">\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ovonetwork.com\/blog\/high-mountain-resorts-summer\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"wp-block-button__link\">Top 5 summer mountain resorts<\/a>\n  <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-message-114\">Message 114<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If the network is too weak for a call, you might still be able to send a text message to <strong>114<\/strong>. Though intended for those with hearing or speech impairments, it\u2019s a good alternative if you don\u2019t have a phone signal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, do note this number has a longer and more limited processing time than the one mentioned above. Therefore, if you need help, start by calling 112 (the European emergency number) before using 114.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-gendloc-app\">The Gendloc app<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"891\" height=\"588\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Call for help from a mobile phone and explain the situation to the responder, who will then send an HTML link by SMS;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click on the link contained in the SMS to allow geolocation;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The exact position will immediately appear on the computer mapping and will be sent directly to the rescuers, who can then intervene more quickly and patrollers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>First-aid patrollers are available to provide assistance on the slopes, however, in some cases, other emergency services will have to get involved.
