A beginner’s guide to skiing near Annecy and La Giettaz

Getting on skis for the first time is not always easy. However, your efforts will all be worth while with the great feeling you get skiing in an exceptional natural environment. The Annecy region has several ski stations with all the ingredients you need to make a start. Here are some of our recommended pistes in Semnoz, Sambuy and La Giettaz to get you started without any dramas.

Skiing at Semnoz

This is the closest ski station to Annecy. Known as the Balcony of the Alps, this station at 1699m has a magnificent view of Lake Annecy and a 360° panorama. Its gentle slopes make it a great choice for budding skiers (seven green runs and five blue runs).

Where to start

There are two ski lifts for beginners: Abbaye serves the green run of the same name, and Cabri will take you to the Canyon and Bûcheron green runs, where you can build up your confidence.

The next step

After that there are several lovely blue runs – try Sapinettes or Belvédère to see how much progress you’ve made.

A good deal for beginners

A 1hr beginner’s pass is 4.70€ (only valid on certain lifts). A half-day pass is 6.50€. An adult day pass is 15.20€.
For more information visit the Semnoz ski lift page. Please note that the website only exists in French.

Good to know

Skiing at Sambuy

Ideally located between Annecy and Albertville, Sambuy is a friendly local station with access to a unique viewpoint of the Alps. It offers both fun and technical runs, which will delight beginner and experienced skiers. There are about 10 runs of various levels (three blues, one green). Bonus: Skiing through the pine trees!

Where to start

The green Flocon run is perfect if you want a quiet place to learn, with gentle slopes, a rope tow and ski lift.

The next step

Test your ski legs on the more supported blue runs, Chevreuil et Ardennaise.

A good deal for beginners

The Flocon ski pass is designed for beginners and costs 6€ per day: ski as much as you like on the green run with the Flocon ski lift and the rope tow. You also get two rides on the Ecureuils ski lift. Adult day pass: 19€

This little mountain village at the foot of the Col des Aravis is part of the Portes du Mont-Blanc ski region (Combloux, Jaillet/Megève, Cordon). Surrounded by spruce forests, its highest point is Le Torraz (1930m), which has a stunning panoramic view of Mont-Blanc and the Aravis.

Where to start

Le Torraz, which is accessible from Le Plan, is not ideal for beginners, with mostly red and blue runs. There is one run for beginners which starts from the Le Torraz télécabine. Le Secteur du Jaillet is better: The Le Jaillet ski lift (on the Megève side) serves the green Les 7 Nains run, which is ideal for beginners.

The next step

More confident skiers can move to the Christomet sector, where they can try blue runs such as  Chevreuil or join the La Giettaz slope by the Treffléannaise.  There they can push themselves on the beautiful blue supported blue slopes.

A good deal for beginners:

There’s a special pass for beginners at 12,00€ per day, which is valid for one slope (Giettaz, Jaillet, Combloux – unlimited access to some ski lifts). The ESF at La Giettaz offers a “first time” course for adult beginners – three days/two hours for 75€.
